Bootstrapped Startup Creating a Marketing Plan from Scratch

Below is our interview with Nicolas Costa who worked with our coach, Josh to build out a practical (and very detailed) marketing plan. Nicolas founded Soaring Towers which is a Managed Service Provider, and utilized Josh’s expertise to audit their entire marketing funnel. Let’s dig into the juicy details.

Q. Hey Nic, big fan of what you’re building. Tell us a bit about yourself and what drives you to continue grinding as a founder!

A. Hi, my name is Nick, and I am the founder of SoaringTowers. SoaringTowers is a next generation Managed Service Provider that leverages AI to solve business issues and keep their business secured. I envision a world where software bugs, viruses, and device sluggishness no longer appear, by leveraging AI models to identify key indicators of issues before they grow into problems. This is something that we are building and hope to solve most of our clients issues before they occur in the next few years.

Q. Wow, okay. That sounds fun actually! Given all the competition you face, what’re some top challenges in growing a company in your industry? How do you stand out from other MSPs?

A. The largest challenge with growing a business in the MSP industry is the lack of diversification of our offerings. All of the companies are offering almost identical services, while leveraging many of the same providers. We focus on standing out by leveraging automation to resolve issues for our clients faster or before they even notice there is a problem. This saves businesses time and money, by a full IT team for a fraction of the price.

Q. What made you reach out to Sparrow? Were there roadblocks you were experiencing for Soaring Towers?

A. Soaring Towers was growing, but not at a rate that we would like. Our marketing was not connecting and we felt that money was being burned due to our team's inexperience with startup marketing.

Q. Was there anything specific about Josh’s expertise that made him ideal for you?

A. Josh has scaled many companies quickly and seemed well versed on modern marketing strategies.

A. Nearly all, however, where Josh really shined was when he broke down why or why not to utilize some marketing channels. He articulated his points and clarified questions I had pertaining to SEO & paid ads that allowed me to create a plan for growth.

Q. Now that you have the structure & growth strategy from Josh, how prepared do you feel in implementing it for Soaring Towers? Were you provided with the context/information needed to make the rubber hit the road?

A. The information Josh provided has allowed me to refocus my efforts on marketing that matters. Not only do I have a better plan that we are starting to execute on, our costs are dropping as we are now focusing on more effective marketing.

Q. That’s awesome man. On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being “not at all” and 10 being “extremely”) how disappointed would you be if you couldn’t continue working with Josh?

A. 10, Josh has helped with clarifying the direction that we are going to take our marketing. Without Josh we would have spent a lot more time and money trying to create a plan. Josh helped to provide us with clarity and direction for our next steps forward.

Q. What kind of companies would you recommend Sparrow to? The more specific, the better!

A. Startups or companies that have a very solid product/PMF that are looking to scale quickly without VC backing.
